Thinley Lendup Lama, the man who played the protagonist in the famous film Caravan died after falling off a horse he was riding.
Thinley Lundup was a star of Oscar nominated movie ‘Caravan’ also known as’ Himalaya’. In 1999, “Caravan” was nominated in the best foreign film category in 72nd Oscar Academy Awards, a feat that no Nepali film has been able to repeat since. Caravan is a movie by French photographer Eric Valli. The movie captures the life of the yak caravan traders pitted against the harsh mountains, nature and their culture in Dolpo region of Nepal.
Except some actors, everyone else in the film was a local, including Thinley Lhundup (who plays Thinley) from Saldang, Dolpo district. Thinley became a celebrity in Nepal almost overnight after the release of the movie and over the world after the movie nominated for Oscars. But this celebrity status has not changed his life. He is just what he was. May be the movie makers’ life has changed. Thinley is just living his ordinary life, still struggling to make his living.
